Collaborating with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Du Yun as part of her Future Tradition project series, Spa Theory and Hana S. Kim concepted an Augmented Reality opera performance within the UNESCO heritage site, The Master of the Nets Garden 网师园 and the Astor Court at the Met Museum 明轩. The project was proposed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Met’s Astor Court, built after the Master Nets Garden which was the first cultural project that China and US collaborated and built, re-establishing their diplomatic relations in 1979.
The project trailer above features the famed 80-year-old Kunqu Opera inheritor and performer, Shen Shihua, 沈世华。Looking at the classical aria from Peony Pavillon, it transmutes an eternal quest, in search of an innermost freedom.
